Joanna Borromeo is a treasure in Calgary’s soul/jazz music scene, a Juno-nominated vocalist, pianist and songwriter. Her music has topped numerous R&B/Soul and Jazz radio charts across Canada and has earned her two major award nominations. In 2013, Joanna was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for Best Soul/R&B Album of the Year. In 2014, Joanna was nominated for a Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Her music has also landed her opportunities to perform in some of California’s most significant music venues for jazz, hip hop, R&B, and soul, including The Blue Whale in LA and Yoshi’s in San Francisco. Along the way, she has performed at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, The Medicine Hat Jazz Festival, and the Toronto International Jazz Festival. She has opened for Laila Biali, The Sextones, and Jeremy Passion, in addition to other artists and bands while on tour.
Prior to starting a career as a solo artist, Joanna has worked extensively as a multi-genre musician in Toronto, performing in local venues and touring across Canada, The UK, and the Caribbean to perform numerous music festivals and concerts. Joanna currently runs her own music teaching business and maintains a regular gigging schedule as a singer-pianist. Taking a break from touring, Joanna is developing new material to record for her next album.
Kate Melvina is a soul/jazz singer, pianist and composer based in Calgary, AB. Kate was raised in a family of musicians and was surrounded by jazz at an early age. As a child, she quickly became a proficient classical pianist, winning awards in competitions like the Kiwanis Festival. While being able to play technically demanding pieces, her teachers felt the reason Kate was such a gifted pianist was because of her touch and the feeling she put into her songs. Kate began writing songs as a child and wrote her first song at age 9. In her teen years, she discovered her passion for old soul music and became completely encompassed by it. Her main idol was and will always be Stevie Wonder. While her influences and music reach across many genres — jazz, rnb, alternative, latin, electronic, gospel and hip hop, it is always rooted in soul.
Kate has left audiences stunned by the amount of control, passion and warmth she emits through her voice. Kate is the lead singer and keyboardist for the brand new project «CKS», a group devoted to playing contemporary music influenced by Jazz and RNB. A crazy love for music, as well as an absolute drive and passion that she puts towards her craft has made her the artist and vocalist she is today. Kate is currently working on her debut EP.
